Alleged Forgery: Obaseki Graduated In 1979, Says UI As Varsity Presents Governor’s Certificate


University of Ibadan has finally broken silence on the case of alleged certificate forgery in which Godwin Obaseki is involved – The institution on Tuesday came as a witness and confirmed that the Edo state governor graduated in 1979 – While presenting exhibits, UI also said maintained that Obaseki’s certificate was not forged as contained in the plaintiff’s defence

The University of Ibadan has finally cleared the controversy surrounding the credentials of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state after the institution presented his certificate to the court.

The Edo governor has been in embroiled in certificate scandal after being dragged to the court by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its member, Edobor Williams, over alleged certificate forgery. Obaseki opened his defence on Tuesday, January 6, with a senior official of UI, Abayomi Samuel Ajayi who is the deputy registrar (legal) in court to present documents, including the original copy of the Bachelor of Arts certificate issued to the governor in 1979. Enugu state schools to resume January 18th – Government UI said Governor Godwin Obaseki graduated in 1979.

Ajayi tendered as exhibits before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja relevant pages of UI calendar for 1976 and admission brochure for degrees. Other exhibits tendered were the award of diplomas and certificates and Obaseki’s application for admission and another one for the collection of his certificate from the university.

The witness also stressed that the Edo state governor gained admission into the institution as a student in 1976 through the direct entry and graduated in 1979. The case was adjourned till Wednesday, January 6, by Justice Mohammed for further hearing with the governor’s camp getting the first assurance of victory in a case that has been said to be a distraction to Obaseki’s second term reign.
