NANS Holds Leadership Summit; As Police Commissioner, UNIUYO, AKSU, VCs, ASUU Coordinator, Task Students On Leadership


The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Akwa Ibom State Axis, has held her 2021 Summit in Uyo on the topic: Students’ Community: Leadership, Prospects and Values.

Speaking at the event which took place at the University of Uyo Main Campus, Uyo on Friday 29th January, 2021, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, appreciated the Comrade Edidiong Uko led NANS executive for the summit.

According to Prof. Ndaeyo “the gathering of today is very unique in the sense that it is a gathering of Eagles, that is, the gathering of the students, by the students and for the students, the critical stakeholders in the education sector”.

The Vice Chancellor whose address was read by the Dean, Students Affairs, Dr. Etefia Ekanem stressed that the students should make good use of the opportunity, pointing that the summit provides avenue to learn and unlearn.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Nse Essien, represented by the Dean of Students Affairs, congratulated Comrade Edidiong Uko on his successful tenure and commended his selfless service to the students community.

He encouraged students to trod the path of leadership with diligence and integrity.

ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Aniekan Brown, who was the keynote speaker, advised student leaders to ensure that their attitude inspires others to greatness.

He defined leadership as “a process of motivating people to attain higher level of civilization and pleasure”.

The don stated further that the greatest value one can add to leadership is to create impact advising students to regard leadership as a means to an end but not as an end in itself.

Also at the event, Hon. Leo Leo Umanah, an Executive Director in Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, in a paper on the topic: CREATING VALUES AS A YOUNG LEADER advised that for one to create impact as “a young leader one must not drink, smoke and womanize.”

According to him, leadership is beyond being popular to delivering good dividends to create positive impact within the time one is called to serve.

Another speaker at the event was Mrs. Uwem Eyo, a mentor and leadership coach, who delivered lecture on the topic: THE PEARL OF SUCCESS.

She stated that success takes a process, stressing that students should be willing to follow the process to success rather than attempt to jump over due process to success.

According to her “contents cannot raise above the lid of the container”.

Mrs Eyo who is the wife of the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Local Government Service Commission, advised students to always ensure that they are well equip for the success they aim to achieve.

She said proper planning was essential to attaining goals that one works hard to achieve.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Andrew Amengheme, represented by CSP Akpan Daniel, the Divisional Police Officer, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, advised Nigerian students to always channel their youthful energy to productive ventures.

He appreciated Comrade Edidiong Uko and his executive for initiated such a resourceful summit.

The Police Boss assured that the Police would always be there for the students and other law abiding Nigerians.

Hallmark of the event was the presentation of awards and induction into NANS Hall of Fame.
